When I was going through the final stages of getting my school paperwork processed, one academic advisor laughed and with the most sarcastic voice possible, “French! That’s something you’re going to use!” By that point, I’d already completed those credits and it had been a requirement to have foreign language, not a choice.
But I can say it was useful! I pre-ordered this book when I first heard about it last fall. It’s a retriever training book subtitled “L’approche positive”, the author has goldens, and supposedly didn’t use an electric collar.
The book and accompanying DVD have some clean training plans that obviously have worked for author. Sometimes it seems like things were lumped together in too big of steps, but only in ways that are typically done. There are a few places where corrections are used (a “no”)… though from what I saw in the DVD, Michaud’s “no’s” are more happy than some of my praise! It wasn’t at all uncomfortable to read or watch.
Unlike most of the other retriever training books I’ve read, the (many, beautiful, golden retriever!) photos in this book were relating to the material and very helpful to understand the set up and training exercise. The explanations for terms and concepts was way clearer than in the other books.
It was interesting to see what traditional retriever training exercises were used, which were modified greatly, and what other exercises were used.
I will definitely be referencing this book and only wish I was close enough to the author to go take lessons. Mapquest tells me it would be an 18 hour drive and that might just be a little too far….
